Food waste transformed into poultry, animal or fish feed by means of heat treatment and/or fermentation at Level 1 makes more sense than feeding food waste to larvae and/or worms at Level 2. If food waste turns bad and cannot be transformed into feed, then it makes sense to feed it to larvae. Generally, food waste should not be routed to biodigesters or gasifiers.
If high-grade heat and biochar are needed, there are many types of agricultural residue and woody biomass at Level 4 that can be used to fulfill this need. There are levels of waste transformation that should be respected in order to achieve the highest environmental and economic benefit.
