IBI Webinar on B4SS (Indonesia, Vietnam)

https://biochar-international.org/webinars-list/

Upcoming Webinars

IBI Educational Webinar Series: Biochar for Sustainable Soils (B4SS)

11/29/2018Presented by Ruy Anaya de la Rosa
Biochar projects spanning multiple countries are still relatively few and far between. There is much to learn from these types of multinational projects. IBI has invited Ruy Anaya de la Rosa, the Project Director from the recently concluded Biochar for Sustainable Soils (B4SS) to discuss lessons learned, challenges and best practices from his experiences collaborating biochar projects teams in China, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Peru and Vietnam.
B4SS was funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the Land Degradation Focal Area in the GEF-5 Strategies.  The objective of the B4SS was to demonstrate and promote the adoption of sustainable land management practices involving the use of innovative organic amendments, based on biochar, that improve the capture and efficient use of nutrients, and enhance productivity, improve climate resilience, support rural livelihoods, and contribute to watershed management. A key goal was to promote the diffusion and successful adoption of biochar techniques among B4SS partner countries and beyond.
The project was focused on collating knowledge generated through the implementation of the targeted biochar demonstration projects. Awareness and improved understanding amongst smallholders, including women’s groups, and resource managers about the most effective biochar formulations and application rates to improve soil functions and reduce land degradation, will be created and shared among stakeholders. This integrated global approach to advance the knowledge on the use of biochar for SLM also conveyed other messages to farming communities mainly interested in soil improvement.

IBI Webinar: Anaerobic Digestion and Biochar

Register Now for the IBI Webinar:
Synergies Between Anaerobic Digestion & Biochar
October 30, 2017 3:30-5:00 pm EDT
Research has shown that there are many synergies to be found integrating pyrolysis and gasification with anaerobic digestion (AD) systems. Carbonizing the anaerobic digested fibers could be a viable way to create adsorbent for the removal of soluble phosphorous from Anaerobic digesters effluents. Using biochar in the AD substrate can boost not only the quantity but the quality of the methane (CH4) produced. It can also reduce the H2S generated during the AD process thereby reducing wear and tear on equipment.

In the webinar we will discuss the possibilities to integrate acidic biochars with dissolved air flotation systems for ammonia removal. The focus of this webinar is on pyrolysis and gasification, two technologies that are capable of converting the digested fibers into a bio-char, and that can be integrated with AD. During the presentation Dr. Garcia-Perez will also discuss some of the potential uses of these chars in anaerobic digestion systems.

IBI Webinar - Biochar building materials & composites

International Biochar Initiative - Educational Webinar Series
 Biochar Building Materials & Composites
 May 23, 2017 • 5:00 - 6:30 pm EDT
While the use of biochar as a soil amendment has been researched for more than a decade, the use of carbonized biomass in building materials and other composites is just beginning to flourish.  Not only can carbon be sequestered in building materials, but using biochar can lower the embodied energy of such materials.  Importantly various properties of the building materials and composites can be enhanced when biochar is added to cement and other materials.  This Webinar brings together three of the leaders in the field of biochar use in building materials and composites to provide a glimpse into the latest research on this topic.
Hans-Peter Schmidt, head of the Ithaka Institute for Carbon Strategies, was an early pioneer in using biochar in plasters and concrete.  He applied his biochar enhanced plaster to his wine cellar as well as to the headquarters of the Ithaka Institute and has made a variety of different building materials.  Hans-Peter will provide an update on how his early biochar based materials have fared as well as an update on other more recent research collaborations on the use of biochar based materials in tunnels.
Harn Wei Kua, an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore, has worked on sustainable building materials and methods for many years.  He has recently published a paper on the benefits of using biochar made from food waste and saw dust in cementitious mortar which will be described in this webinar.  He will also speak about the various concrete properties that biochar can improve.
John McDonald-Wharry is a researcher based in New Zealand that has been studying the use of biochar in various construction and composite materials.  He will provide an overview of how material properties typically change with increasing degree of carbonization (or charring intensity), and discuss different approaches to creating composite materials from chars and carbonized biomass.  John will also address various claimed functionality of char-containing composites and what evidence is currently available as well as some potential issues and challenges with biochar-containing composites and their research, development and implementation.
This webinar will be of interest to architects, urban planners, the construction industry, as well biochar producers, researchers, climate researchers and more.  An interactive Q&A period will follow at the end of the Webinar.
