Biochar project report from Dennis Enright in Thailand

Dennis is a kiwi commercial organic vegetable grower who is volunteering his holiday time in Thailand. He helped me establish the NZ biochar interest group, AllBlackEarth in 2013 and is now sharing his knowledge on biochar production and application in Thailand.

Dennis has prepared a 2-page report (with photos) on the progress of the project...

"Green Net, a Thai social enterprise organisation based in Bangkok is interested in knowing whether biochar can be shown to be an effective tool to assist organic farmers to manage soil nutrients and soil moisture content. That is, a tool to help "climate proof" crop yields.

In August 2014, they organised workshops for two organic farmer groups, one in Chanchengsao, a province near Bangkok and the other at Maetha near Chiang Mai where they discussed biochar, made biochar, and then established some small field experiments to see if they could see any benefits. ..."

Biochar, Top Lit Open Burn Brush Pile Style

Steve has done a great job describing his experience with a top-lit pile burn.
If biochar and carbon has a value to plantations in the future, then this simple method may be the starting point for a biochar production revolution.

GeoTherapy - chapter 15

I have permission from Prof. Reg Preston to circulate a chapter of this book which he authored. Please follow this link for your copy.

The bottom line

The potential role of biochar as a means of sequestering atmospheric carbon has so far been the main focus of attention. However, its virtues are much wider with potential impacts on soil fertility, plant yield and quality and as an additive in livestock feed, biodigesters and other liquid waste disposal systems. More important is the emphasis that biochar has given to the overall concept of the systems approach to utilization of renewable resources and recycling of wastes with maintenance or improvement in soil fertility. Biochar makes most sense when it is derived from a process that aims to optimize the varied characteristics of biomass, to satisfy the major needs of humanity which are food, energy, shelter and a healthy environment. It needs to be produced and used locally for maximum benefits.”

Playing chicken with biochar

Standard shed based poultry and egg production systems can have negative impacts on animal welfare / health and the local and wider environment. These problems usually have economic impacts on the industry. Biochar has been shown to have a positive effect over a wide range of issues via diverse applications.

There are many interesting articles and published research on the use of biochar in the poultry industry. This article from David Yarrow is already a few months old but provides a great summary on the opportunities that are being explored around the world.

CHARdays: June 18-21

This in from Kathleen Draper at the Biochar Journal... do we have the momentum in SEA to get some events planned in time? I see Sri Lanka (and now Philippines) are in...

An invitation to join us for CHARdays: June 18 - 21

Hello biochar community -

We'd like to invite all of your to join us for the first (hopefully annual) CHARdays event from June 18 - 21st. Location: your backyard or at your company location or anywhere you choose. The idea is to build awareness for biochar by hosting charring events around the globe. For those interested in participating, we are working on a way to help you advertise your event though social media and the Biochar Journal.

We don't have a baseline goal for how much carbon we think the biochar community could help sequester in these 4 days but would love to hear what you all think.

Hope you will join us in spreading the word!

http://www.biochar-journal.org/en/ct/60-CHARdays-2015

We have commitments from Australia, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, and the US so far which is great.  There will be at least 100 Swiss and German 'charmaniacs' participating as well and some have asked us about posting live video - we are checking into that.

If you'd like us to help advertise your event, feel free to send the relevant information to Maddie Brown(brown@ithaka-institute.org) . You can use your own flyer or just send us the details and we'll put them in this simple format and post to our CHARdays Pinterest board.

Cheers, Kathleen

ARPOS - a new research initiative

The 'Academic Research on Palm Oil Sustainability' or ARPOS Network has been recently established in Malaysia. Its evolution has progressed through a number of workshops at which I have been participating. They have produced this report and their next step is broad engagement to gather ideas for research topics. This is a great opportunity for biochar production and application development within the palm oil industry, which to date has been very slow in studying biochar opportunities.

The following survey is available for you to present your ideas around biochar research in the palm oil industry. I've submitted my ideas already...
================
Dear Workshop Participants,

I hope this finds you well.

Last March a team of researchers from UTM, UKM and UNMC invited you to attend a workshop on ‘Palm Oil Sustainability Research’. During the workshop we discussed the high level themes for palm oil sustainability research and following some further discussions we agreed upon fourteen (14) themes. These 14 themes now form the basis of an on-line survey which serves a means to undertaken a global stakeholder engagement exercise.

As a reminder the aspiration of this survey is that stakeholders with interests in palm oil - in Southeast Asia and beyond - will submit their pressing research questions which, following a second survey to prioritize these questions can serve as a basis for future research strategies going forward. This includes the research strategy of the ARPOS (Academic Research for Palm Oil Sustainability) Network in Malaysia.

The survey is now open (see link below) and I request your support in forwarding the survey to your contacts with specific or broad interests in palm oil sustainability. The survey will close on June 15th 2015.

We've managed to gain a reasonable level of local interest, particular from a couple of key local and international stakeholders. A good start so far!

Finally, I would also like to offer the chance to be a co-author on the academic paper, including input on the analysis of the data and in the writing stage. Please let me know on your interest in this and I’ll follow up with you in due course.

Below this email I've included a short summary explaining the aims and objectives of the survey which you could use to forward to your contacts.

Please let me know if this sounds of interest and whether you're keen to help circulate the
survey.

Best wishes,
Rory

Survey Aims and Objectives

Three Malaysian universities (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and University Nottingham Malaysia Campus) are leading on a global stakeholder engagement exercise to identify priority research questions for the study of sustainable palm oil.

The aspiration is that stakeholders with interests in palm oil - in Southeast Asia and beyond - will submit their pressing research questions which, following a second survey to prioritize these questions can serve as a basis for future research strategies going forward. In particular, it is hoped that the outputs of this study will help shape the research and funding strategies for palm oil in both palm oil producing as well as consuming countries. The results of this project will be made public.

I would like to request your assistance in this exciting sounding project by undertaking the research survey yourself and forwarding to individuals or organisations in your own network who might be interested in participating. To fill out the survey, please click on the following link:

The survey will close on 15th June 2015.

Thanking you for your cooperation.

Kon-Tiki developments in Tasmania

Cone kilns, TFOD's, Kon-Tiki, whatever you like to call them, are rapidly becoming popular for biochar production. There are many clever design innovations being demonstrated around the world. I've been covering this in more detail here,
http://soilcarbon.org.nz/tag/tfod/

I'm in regular contact with Frank Strie in Tasmania. He has biochar activity humming in the state, working at the 'carbon' face of the industry. Here is a recent report...

Project report from Thailand

Jay White has produced a great report on his work with TLUD's and biochar in Thailand. The project was located at two sites in Chang Mai in January and February this year.
[click title to link to report - 3.5MB]

Promotion of Clean Emissions Charcoal Production and Use of Biochar

"PROJECT GOALS

"The PCV discussed these observations and research with the agricultural specialists at the Sub-district Administrative Organization (SAO) of Tambon Soppoeng and the Mae Lod Royal Agricultural Project. Both parties expressed interest in promoting the TLUD kiln technology and the use of biochar in the community. The PCV and staff of the SAO and Royal Project agreed that before promoting these technologies the organizers of this project needed to become practiced with the operation of the TLUD kiln and with it test pyrolysis of different locally available feedstocks. The primary goal of this project was to promote continued use of biochar and the TLUD kiln among community members. The testing of TLUD kiln use on different feedstocks was a secondary outcome necessary for achieving the primary goal.

 PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS
The project’s design had three objectives to meet the goal of promoting the TLUD kiln and biochar use.
  • Objective 1: Build two TLUD kilns with counterparts in the SAO and Royal Project and test their use on five locally available feedstocks. These feedstocks were hardwood waste from fruit trees, bamboo, corn cobs, rice husks, and rice straw.
  • Objective 2: Promote the TLUD kiln design and the production of biochar in two trainings, at the Sao and the Royal Project, open to the local public and select 10 participants from the most interested attendees.
  • Objective 3: Provide free TLUD kilns and personal training for the 10 participants in the use of their TLUD kiln and in the incorporation of resulting charcoal into organic fertilizer. "

Sustainable Technologies for Small-Scale Biochar Production—A Review

There are strong Malaysian links to this new publication. Nsamba studied in Malaysia under Prof. Bachmann and Sarah and Gerard have been frequent visitors to the region associated with their biochar research projects. The full report is available here.

Sustainable Technologies for Small-Scale Biochar Production—A Review

Abstract
Charcoal has found enormous application in both agriculture (AKA biochar) and other sectors. Despite its potential benefits, small scale technologies relevant for its production remain a challenge. Technologies striking a balance between user friendliness, energy efficiency, ease of adaptation and limited emissions could easily be integrated into the local community for the sustainable production of biochar answering both technical and socio-economic aspects. These technologies can be customized to recover the produced heat alongside biochar and the producer gas. The purpose of this work is to review the state of the art in small scale technologies, their associated risks and challenges as well as research gaps for future work. Factors affecting biochar production have been discussed and temperature is known to heavily influence the biomass to biochar conversion process. Based on the reviewed work, there is a need to develop and promote sustainable and efficient technologies that can be integrated into biochar production systems. There is also further need to develop portable, economically viable technologies that could be integrated into the biochar production process without compromising the quality of produced biochar. Such technologies at midscale level can be channeled into conventional small scale farmer use in order that the farmers can process their own biochar.

Biochar commercialisation in Malaysia

A Malay language newspaper has recently included an article on biochar based around work emanating from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The online article is in Malay here. I've used an online translation service that provides a rather poor English translation.
The article describes UPM work with biomass from the palm oil industry and product development activities leading to trial product sales at a horticulture event last November. I'm sure we will hear more about this at the biochar workshop (previous post).
